Routes 142, 116, 3 and 302 in the areas surrounding Franconia Notch State Park to the north will not disappoint the early going foliage seekers and are most assured to still be quiet and easy going. Get out early and you will have an open chance to see a moose on any of these roads, or take an evening tour and enjoy the rosy sunset playing against all the fall foliage.

2010 Franconia Notch Foliage Report #1, September 9, 2010,

We are indeed approaching that time of year folks and we have again agreed to serve as an "Official NH Fall Foliage Reporting Station". Our first report follows:

The foliage in and about the northern stretches of Franconia Notch and the surrounding Western White Mountain region is showing very early signs of the grand display yet to come. With tips of red on distressed maples and tinges of yellow on sun drenched beech and birch it would not be quite accurate to say our region is all green still, however it would not be much of a stretch either. Due to this summers road projects, there are many miles of fresh, smooth, traffic free pavement awaiting the early arriving visitors. There's Always an Up Side to NH's Western White Mountains.

We had been wanting to re-visit one of our 'ole favorites' this past week to rekindle the memories of why it's a favorite... and glad we did. The walk in to Georgianna Falls fallows along the Harvard Brook which is laden with smaller falls along the way. The Photo to the right is of where you get the first good look at Harvard Brook.








The photo to the left is one of many smaller rivulets along the way. The side streams are best and some times only seen during spring run-off and after torrential rains. See, there is an up side to rain in the mountains yet please always use caution near the water. White Mountain river rocks get extremely slippery!!


The first set of falls which are spectacular in their own right, and as seen below left, are but a taste of what lies ahead. The trail does get steep at times and may be difficult to follow. Wear a good pair of hikers and if you drift too far of stream, you know you are off trail. Just keep this in mind as you work your way up through the rocks that have "washed up" during previous floods. There's lots of'em, you'll see. See Below Right

From the mid-spring weeks of about April 27 to May 15, give or take a bit for location south vs. north and you are most sure to see some of the most beautiful Spring Trilium along the way.

On-ward and upward and after about 35 to 40 minutes you ought to be nearing the top and main set of falls. Careful on the climb up and no goofin' around near the edges allowed. The price of slipping will be a hefty if not life threatening one. Just be safe and you will be fine however.

surrounding White Mountain National Forest has just received a
fresh layer of Pow-Pow Powder folks. We received a healthy dose of 7" to 10" of well developed powder. Dense in nature, floaty in feeling and all around fine for all winter's fun. Cannon Mounatin, Bretton Woods and Loon Mountain ski areas are all sporting 100% open coverage or darn close to it. All the area's snowmobile, snow-shoe and cross-country ski trails are also loaded with the fresh white stuff and "there's plenty of room at the inn" in the White Mountains. No Crowds, especially mid-week.

With the trail conditions and snow depths as they are now, it's looking real good for the winter and early spring skiing months ahead. January is one day from over and... No Thaw. Yeah! January 24, 2009... The weather forecast as seen on Accuweather.com looks nothing shy of Perfect for winter fun in Franconia Notch State Park and the surrounding White Mountain National Forest areas. With daytime temps forecast to be in the mid 20 degree range along with mostly to partly sunny skies, it's about as good as a January winter forecast gets. We are now in the "dead of winter", yet conditions for some great outdoor living couldn't be better.

Champagne Powder falls on Franconia, NH

January 11th, 2009... Franconia Notch and the surrounding White Mountain National Forest winter playgrounds have received 6" to 8" of light, dry, "champagne" powder snow from last evening's storm. Cannon Mountain, Bretton Woods, Loon Mountain and all the surrounding cross-country trail systems will be adding open terrain through-out the week ahead in preparation for this weekend's Martin Luther King Holiday. The weather is looking perfect, if not just a bit chill... however it's winter after-all. It's supposed to be cold.

More Snow in Franconia

January 8th, 2009. Perhaps the tide of warmer weather in Franconia has truly turned in favor of winter. In the past 24 to 36 hrs we have received 3" to 6" inches of snow in the western White Mountains area, with a mix of sleet having occurred during the middle of the storm. We now have a wonderful base coat to support all the good freshness to come. The forecast for the next 5 out of 7 days for the Franconia area predicts snow or flurries so it's getting good.

This week's Downhill skiers & riders at Cannon Mountain, Bretton Woods or Loon can expect primarily packed powder surfaces, with loose granular secondary, while Cross-Country skiers can expect packed powder on top of a "solid base layer". With every flurry the trails just keep getting better & better. Snowmobile enthusiasts can expect to find most all trails to be open with major corridors groomed and ready to go. Snow conditions may prove thin in heavy traffic areas however. Ice Climbers and winter hiking enthusiasts will not be disappointed by either the Franconia Notch State Park or White Mountain National Forest which surround it. Lots of ice awaits, and lots of wild quiet times are to be enjoyed, but do so safely of course.

Mid-Summer's just about here. Why aren't You?

We so often forget that summer in merely 94 days long, which includes 21 days of September. So, take the "tail end of summer" out because school's back and most of the freedom of summer is lost by then and by our count that puts us just about in the middle of the Sweet Spot called Summer in NH's White Mountains. This summer is no different, with cool evenings, warm days and lots of clear skies and green, mountainous landscapes to be enjoyed. Best of all... NO Crowds, No Traffic and No Hassles along the way.

Now when we say clear I suppose we need to qualify just what we mean... which would be nice clean air. Have we been clear of rain? That's another story, as the spot thunder showers that so often occur in the afternoon hours on warm-n-sunny days certainly have been, yet in the past 3 days we have received a solid to almost severe amount of rain. Yup- it's dampened some spirits and gotten a few others more familiar with satellite television than they ever wished to, however there are a few upsides to highlight.

Fast running rivers and fabulous water falls. We got both right now and seems we will for the next good number of days if not well into next week. No worries of smaller streams going dry and lower water rivers not supporting your trip down stream right now folks. As I have regularly enjoyed both pursuits myself on many occasions ,chasing water falls and kayaking local stream (not at the same time however!), for those folks staying with Franconia Notch Vacation seeking the "insiders direction on where the sweet spots are to be found" I'll be there to direct you in a knowledgeable & caring manor.

Summer in the Mountains has started in certain & definite style.

June 21st has come and gone and the 94 days of summer have already begun their quick count down to fall here in Franconia, NH. Our lakes, rivers and streams have "warmed up" nicely and the leaves have filled in the forests left barren by winter's burrrr. Spring has arrived in Franconia, in force!

What a string of weather we have been enjoying these past couple weeks. Rain showers have been very low, while day time temps, the spring sun and amount of spring corn snow have all been quite high. Hats off to all Franconia's local ski resorts, Cannon, Bretton Woods & Loon Mountain for a fabulous season. Mother Nature's extra bounty was great yet without the hard work of the folks at the resorts just mentioned our skiing would not be nearly as great as it was...and still is in some spots. The calendar and lack of skiers closed our ski resorts this season, and not the lack of snow.

Now that the lifts have stopped turning our thoughts and activities quickly change to that of the next season: hiking, biking, scenic touring and simply working in the yard...with a great White Mountain view awaiting your occasional glance or prolonged stare.

With the number of warm and sunny days that we've enjoyed our "Mud season" has been shorter than ever expected, however wooded and upper level trails still have areas of mud, snow and ice- especially at elevations above 2750 feet. The regions waterfalls, rivers and streams are all in full force, the leaves have yet to blank out the views for the summer and best of all- No Bugs!. Current & emerging conditions: Sunday- March 16, 2007
Spring Skiing and late season Snowmobile Conditions are setting up very nicely folks. There is at least a 2+' foot snow pack in the upper elevations outside of Franconia town center and it is dense. Having already experienced 2 warming trends "the fluff is gone", yet what we have now is perfect spring sugar and corn snow, sandwiched between moments of fresh powder as storms do frequent still happen. This time of year the powder doesn't last yet it's still a blast. So is the fact that we also get the enjoyment of long & bright sunny days on the slopes, trails and White Mountain summits beyond.

Late Winter- early Spring trail hiking conditions for hikers and forest trekkers are also in fine shape however icy conditions should be expected, as should be quite variable weather conditions with wide variations in temperates from day to night. Upper elevations and above tree line areas should be avoided unless properly prepared to deal with severe winter conditions still. Safety First.
